Bellingham, Wash., June 1, 2000 - Alpha’s new Powernode system has been nominated as a finalist for Communications Technology’s first annual Readers’ Choice Award. These awards are given to the most outstanding and innovative new products in the industry. Alpha’s Powernode has been designed to provide unlimited backup to cable television, data and lifeline telephony services.

The Alpha Powernode combines industry-leading power technology to provide maximum power density, unparalleled system reliability and indefinite runtime. It includes a state-of-the-art XM Series 2 CableUPS® power supply, AlphaCell extended-life batteries, and a fully integrated AlphaGen generator system - all in a single, compact, neighborhood friendly package.

The Alpha Powernode battery compartment accommodates a single string of standby batteries, one generator ignition battery, and provides space for the co-location of coax connectors. “Smart start” delayed starting circuitry allows system batteries to provide backup power for short outages and the integrated generator to be brought fully on-line for extended outages. This feature optimizes both battery life and system reliability. The Alpha Powernode can be configured for either 36V or 48V systems.

Because the Alpha Powernode combines familiar and proven powering components, the need for retraining and re-certifying installation and maintenance personnel is minimized. Common components also allow operators added flexibility during network upgrade and rebuild activities.

The Alpha Powernode is certified to UL, CSA, and NFPA standards, and includes status monitoring capability, as well as natural gas and electrical service entrances.
