Bellingham, Wash., - Power system provider Alpha Technologies, provides backup power systems to keep intersections running when the utility power is interrupted. Novus outdoor traffic UPS systems provide 1000 or 1800VA to the signal to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians at intersections.

Over the past year the effects of power loss at traffic intersections has become increasing more apparent.

An example of the effects of an intersection without power, occurred in 1997 with a court case against a power utility that cut power to a traffic signal on a stormy September day, after lightning dropped a power line into a back yard. A nearby traffic signal intersection also lost power, which resulted in a fatal collision at the intersection. Had a backup power system been installed, the intersection would have been operating normally, potentially avoiding the traffic fatality.

Alpha Technologies has been providing backup power systems for intersections since 1991 and leads the industry with over 6,000 UPS systems installed in interactions across North America. With the development, and implementation of lower power consuming LED signal heads, UPS systems have now becoming an effective and affordable component of the traffic intersection.

The rugged, Novus outdoor power system provides LED intersections with customer specified runtimes for full controller and signal backup power operation with an additional backup power in “all red” flash mode.

Features of a typical Novus UPS include a 1000 or 1800VA power module, weather-resistant retrofit enclosure, premium AlphaCell AGM or Gel batteries and bypass and transfer switches.
