Bellingham, Wash., June 3, 2003 - Leading power manufacturer, Alpha Technologies, announces CalTrans approval for the Novus Traffic Power (TP) System. This outdoor powering system can be deployed with new intersection equipment or retrofitted into existing cabinets to provide traffic intersections with complete emergency back up power.

This power system, installed with Alpha’s CalTrans approved battery string, provides up to two hours of full backup power and four to six hours of backup power in red flash mode for the typical LED intersections. Hybrid LED/Incandescent and full incandescent intersections can be powered up to four hours in red flash mode.

The Novus TP System includes the Novus 1000 VA UPS, Manual Bypass Switch (MBS) with integrated Automatic Transfer Switch, four TG 1265 Batteries, Battery Swing-Out Tray, Battery Cable Kit, and an Alarm and Wiring Harness. All components are easily mounted in any enclosure, including the 170-style controller cabinet with a 19-inch rack and any NEMA type cabinets.

The heart of this system is the Novus 1000 TP Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), which provides intersections up to 875 watts of back-up power. The UPS protects the traffic controller and traffic equipment from electrical spikes and surges, during all modes of operation. This rugged power supply is designed to withstand the harshest outdoor environmental conditions and has a wide temperature range of –40 C to +74C. Front access connections and test points provide easy monitoring and maintenance.

The MBS bypasses the UPS, eliminating controller or signal downtime during routine maintenance or UPS replacement, without disrupting power to the traffic intersection. The embedded ATS automatically transfers power to the battery string if the input current falls below specification in the event of a brownout or complete power outage.
