Alpha Deploys Next Generation Embedded DOCSIS Transponder
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bellingham, Wash., June 16, 2004 - Alpha Technologies announces the deployment of its next generation DOCSIS based status-monitoring transponders. The new Embedded DOCSIS Transponder will debut at the Cable-Tec Expo Show June 16-18, 2004 in Orlando, Florida

Alpha and Tollgrade have collaborated to design a next generation embedded DOCSIS transponder. This product enables the cable operator access to vital system information over the existing DOCSIS infrastructure. Alpha’s new DOCSIS transponders, allow the operator to benefit from the reliability and robustness that is fast becoming a hallmark of DOCSIS, now being widely applied to HFC element management activities throughout North America.

“Monitoring field power supplies has never been easier,” comments Rob Anderson, Alpha’s Director of Product Management, adding “If DOCSIS is already in plant, all a Cable provider need do is install the transponder into the powernode, no additional headend equipment is required. We are also receiving a great deal of interest from systems that have yet to deploy DOCSIS.”

Features of the Embedded Transponder include compatibility with ANSI/SCTE HMS standards, single transponder support for up to six power supplies plus generator and rugged outside plant design.

Alpha’s XMS2 Digital Embedded DOCSIS Transponder enables transponder data to be transmitted to a management system over the network’s DOCSIS cable modem channels through the existing CMTS. Bandwidth utilization is minimized by using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) messages.

Alpha and Tollgrade are broadening their offering of DOCSIS based management solutions, and see a bright future for this technology and now provides one point of contact for all status monitoring related products and services.
