Port St. Lucie, FL is taking
charge of electrical disruptions
that affect traffic intersection
signal systems. Traffic operations
supervisor, Brandon Collins, noticed
that during power outages, critical
resources from his department and
the police force were being used
to manage and direct traffic rather
than repair damaged systems or
provide public safety.
With 86 intersections in the city,
the job of keeping the traffic flowing
during power outages and power
interruptions was being managed
manually by sending a crew to
inoperative intersections, who
would then have to
connect a generator
to the signal control
cabinet and run,
manage and refuel
the generator.
To solve this problem,
Port St. Lucie installed
Alpha battery backup
power systems to
their intersection
control applications.
"I believe that every traffic division
should consider using Alpha
(battery backup) units because
they create a safe environment for
our motoring public," said Collins.
"Uninterrupted signals can save
lives and allow signal technicians
and police officers to manage other
important duties."
These systems now provide
backup power in the event of
power outages or disruptions and
minimize resources needed to keep
traffic moving.
