Alpha Technologies Ltd. (ATL) recently developed a customized outdoor and indoor uninterruptible power supply (UPS) solution as part of an integrated security system being used in some of the largest airports on the east coast.

As part of a PIDS, Alpha UPS solutions provide protection from power interruptions or outages. PIDS are fully integrated security systems incorporating sensors, video and thermal cameras, motion detection devices, access controls, alarms and other intrusion detection devices, tied into a central monitoring facility. They are designed to provide detection and protection 24-hours a day, seven days a week in all weather conditions. This need for a truly ruggedized outdoor UPS solution that can withstand all types of weather conditions is the perfect application for Alpha outdoor UPS products and solutions. Alpha’s knowledge and long standing history as a leader in outdoor UPS solutions was a natural fit for the PIDS applications.

Over the past few years, Alpha has worked closely with homeland security requirements, and established relationships with US defense contractors as a unique UPS solutions provider. ATL applications engineer Satheesh Hariharan worked directly with this PIDS customer to develop a custom solution to provide backup power. Hariharan took the project from concept to creation, working with the customer and the Alpha engineering team to ensure the Alpha solution would meet the customer’s requirements. One of the unique requirements for this project was the need for NEMA 4X (sealed, outdoor rated) stainless steel enclosures. Although a challenging requirement, Alpha’s experience designing and manufacturing customized UPS solutions for harsh outdoor environments made us the right choice.

More than 70 Alpha UPS solutions are being built and deployed for phase one of this PIDS application. With the confidence of knowing an Alpha outdoor UPS solution is in place to protect from power disturbances, our customer can rest easy knowing their security systems will provide the undisturbed protection required in such a demanding environment.
