Indonesian cellular systems go green
Charles Tsang, Director of Sales - Asia, Alpha Technologies Inc.
Early in 2008, Alpha’s Indonesian
distributor, P.T. Graha Fatta, won the
first phase of a solar power system
project installation for the largest
cellular operator in Indonesia. The
systems’ installation took place on the
Sumatra and Kalimantan islands, two
of its largest islands.
Today’s shifting trend towards going
green was a big motivation for the
cellular provider. Replacing its
fossil-fuel powered generators with
the new solar power system will
dramatically reduce high energy
fuel costs and labor maintenance
costs in its cellular BTS stations, and
will improve their overall network
reliability on remote islands.
When fully operational, the system will
provide 1000W of continuous power
24 hours a day. With an estimated time
of two to three years to completion,
the installation will produce an average
of 12.5kW annually generated from
an approximate number of sixty
170W photovoltaic panels per site.
The project’s transmission equipment
manufacturers, will be able to use the
solar-generated energy to power their
DC equipment.
The Alpha / P.T. Graha Fatta solution was
first introduced in fall 2007, with the final
sale and approval made only after the
construction of a sample system.
In the last year, we have helped
design eleven successful installations
for cellular communications in
Indonesia, and have received
orders for 30 more solar energy
systems to be installed on
smaller islands throughout.
