Alpha is making strong progress in the headend power protection market. Over the last couple of years, more and more attention is being placed on headend backup power. One reason is because VoIP is becoming a reality and broadband operators are acknowledging the need for increased power protection in order to provide these services.

At the recent 2005 SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Texas, Alpha highlighted its AC and DC Cable Headend power solutions. Featured in a simulation of a typical cable headend, Alpha demonstrated both single and three phase UPS’s, Cordex DC system with controllers and batteries.

The 1600EP series UPS protects sensitive equipment with loads from 3.6 to 18kVA and is available in a floor mount configuration. This UPS is designed for headends, hub sites and optical transition node (OTN) applications where a compact footprint and high power density is required. Features include hot swappable batteries, slide-out battery trays, external battery connector for extended runtimes, optional modular receptacle panel and internal SNMP/ phase offering provides complete powering protection for headend equipment with power requirements ranging from 10 to 800kVA. The AlphaSource series offers advantages of a centralized power source — minimum space requirement and reduced maintenance compared to multiple small UPS modules. True online topology provides complete isolation and correction from utility power problems. The AlphaSource is available in a space saving footprint complete with maintenance bypass, harmonic elimination input filter and AC distribution options to suit any user.

Complementing the AC UPS’s, Alpha utilizes the Cordex series rectifiers, allowing a plant to be DC powered when VoIP is implemented. DC power systems provide highly reliable DC power for large communication applications. Combined with the Cordex series controller the customer has complete control over the entire power system.

Alpha’s headend battery offering includes three distinct types of battery models for the cable and telecommunication industries. The product offering includes 20 year long life batteries, 10 year telecom front and top terminal batteries and flame retardant UPS batteries.

These headend batteries provide enhanced thermal performance, longer runtimes and extended service life. The front terminal models allow for easier access to the batteries during installation and routine maintenance visits.

Alpha is strong in the headend business and sees a bright future for this market.
